"To play without passion is inexcusable!" - Ludwig van Beethoven

Below you will find the answers to some frequently asked questions about piano lessons. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have!

Frequently asked questions

Q: At what age should my child begin piano lessons?
A: Many children are ready for lessons as early as age 5, and most are ready at age 6. Students should be reading or in the process of learning to read, and be able to understand easy addition and subtraction. The student should be able to keep attention throughout a 30 minute lesson. If you are unsure whether your child is ready, I would be happy to set up a trial lesson where we assess their level.

Q: Do you teach beginning adult students?
A: Yes! I teach students of all ages, and have many adults in my studio. The course of study for an adult will be directed towards your specific goals, whether those be to play a favorite Chopin nocturne, or to accompany your family singing Christmas carols at the holidays.

Q: What kind of instrument is required for lessons?
A: An acoustic piano is preferred, but a digital piano with weighted keys will also suffice. My personal favorite instruments, both digital and acoustic, are made by Yamaha. I am happy to give specific recommendations. It is not necessary to spend a fortune in order to get an instrument.

Q: What styles of music do you teach in your studio?
A: Students in my studio receive a well rounded education. I teach a classical based method to beginners, and eventually we branch off into playing jazz, blues, and pop in addition to pieces from the vast classical repertoire.

Q: What method do you teach?
A: I teach from a variety of method books, including The Music tree, Piano Adventures, and a variety of methods for adults. All methods are supplemented by outside repertoire, scales and exercises, sight reading, and ear training. The course of study will not be the same for any two students, but rather tailored to individual needs and goals.
